Vicars’ Close, Wells
Vicars’ Close, located next to Wells Cathedral, is believed to be the only complete medieval street left in England. It was constructed in the 14th century for the Vicars Choral, an integral part of Cathedral life since the 1100s. Initially comprising 42 houses built under Bishop Ralph of Shrewsbury, the Close now consists of 27 residences, a chapel, library, treasury, muniment room, and a dining hall connected by the Chain Gate Bridge. The iconic chimneys were added in the 15th century, and all buildings within the Close are Grade I listed, with the current occupants including twelve Vicars Choral members, organists, and virgers, reflecting its continued significance and the ongoing tradition of communal living and daily worship.
